The Science Behind Vaping Devices

What Are Vaping Devices?
Vaping devices are electronic systems that heat a liquid solution to create an inhalable aerosol (also known as vapour). These devices rely on thermodynamics, battery power and fluids dynamics to deliver nicotine or flavourings.

The Core Components
All vaping devices share 4 primary mechanisms to operate:
- Battery: typically a lithium-ion cell, which provides the electrical power to operate the device
- Microprocessor: this manages power output and acts as a safety switch
- it is activated either by a button or an airflow sensor that detects when the user inhales
- Atomizer (Heating Element): usually a metal wire coil (or a mesh grid) that converts electrical energy into thermal energy
- Reservoir/ Wick: a porous material (often cotton) that holds the liquid and draws it into the coil

The Physics of Aerosolization
When the device is activated, the battery sends a current to the coil, causing it to heat up rapidly. This heat vaporizes the liquid absorbed in the wick.
As vapour hits the cooler surrounding air, it rapidly condenses into an aerosol. This is why the mist looks like vapour.
