The Anatomy Of A Disposable Vape

Posted by Kayleigh Kivell on

If you’re anything like me, you love watching someone take apart something and then rebuild it from the existing parts. Maybe you’re also interested in mechanics, anatomy, etc! And maybe you’ve wondered from time to time “what is actually inside my disposable vape”; well let me tell you!

The Outside

  • The Outer Shell
    • Made from tough plastic or aluminum alloy, it encases and protects the internal electronics and liquid reservoir
  • The Mouthpiece
    • also known as a “drip tip”
    • shaped for ergonomic comfort, it channels the generated vapour out of the device and into your mouth
    • a silicone seal inside often prevents the liquid from leaking
  • The LED Indicator Light
    • this is the signal that users can see, often displaying battery life and e-liquid percentage

The Inside

  • The Lithium-Ion Battery
    • this supplies electrical energy to the heating element
    • in older or smaller models, it may be non-rechargeable and sized to last as long as the e-liquid
    • in modern high-capacity units, it is rechargeable via a USB-C port
  • The Draw Activated Sensor
    • also known as a “pressure sensor”
    • acts like a modified microphone or a pressure switch
    • when the user inhales through the mouthpiece, this detects the change in air pressure and automatically switches the battery power on without the need for a button
  • The Microcontroller/ Circuit Board
    • this manages the flow of electricity from the battery to the coil, coordinates safety cutoffs and controls visual indicators such as the LED indicator light
  • The E-liquid Reservoir
    • this stores the pre-filled e-liquid until it is needed
  • The Wick
    • usually made of porous organic cotton or specialized fibre, this absorbs the e-liquid from the reservoir and holds it right next to the heating element
  • The Coil
    • also known as the “atomizer” or “heating element”
    • this is a small metal wire or a mesh grid that gets hot when the battery sends an electrical current through it
    • this vaporizes the liquid saturated inside the adjacent wick
